Mrinalini is a mom of two from India whom I met at a Social Enterprise Forum event back in 2012. We had spent a lot of time working together with YES Network, doing Human-centered Design on early childhood education. We both have kids around the same age, both are passionate about early childhood education, and both have been trying to find interesting and meaningful work to do but haven’t had much luck getting paid to do it. (Sigh.) As we catch up on the latest in our lives — her finishing an ethnographic, HCD research job for an international cookware company; and I moving away from non-profit sector back into private sector, she was surprised to hear that I didn’t find the job of primary care giver (aka. stay home dad) fulfilling. “I thought you are a natural!” she said.

I’m aware of the harm that has done to me, and feel lucky I had left that toxic environment when I was 15, so I wasn’t completely destroyed. Thank you for doing what you’ve been doing! Read MorePart 1 在此 前天上了Playright 的一個playwork課程。導師一開波就要我們討論甚麼是child, children 同childhood. 孩子, 孩子們和童年, 字面簡單, 但有趣的事, 大家都感到自己列出的一切 : 開心, 有好奇心, 識自己學, 愛玩…….都是大家認為孩子應該如是, 但現實卻是大有距離的。 教育大同跟Playright所推動的不同, 我們講教育有選擇,他們講free play, 但本質卻一致: 就是要基於孩子出發。正因為孩子個個不同, 遇上不同情況如何處理時, 導師的一句名言就是: there is no answer, it depends. 亦即, 我們要經常觀察、判斷及給予適時的回饋及協助, 這個工作其實非常困難, 相比之下, 改習作就變得容易得多。

Read More開心學校那裡尋? 「教育大同」走訪黃大仙浸信會天虹小學 天虹小學近來好紅。我們在「功課奴隸」群組看到有家長提起,再上網找找,發現常常戴著google眼鏡的朱子穎校長已被傳媒追訪多次,講talk 過百壇,但感覺不外乎是位「潮爆校長」在學校大搞IT,推動電子教學。今天11月28日, 學校要建立一項健力士世界紀錄:由全港1000個學生,利用 3D 打印創作解決「水資源」問題。一間在黃大仙的基層屋邨小學,如何做就這個壯舉? 為了籌備開心學校地圖,我們希望能直接了解「疑似」開心學校,故11月6日, 「教育大同」走訪了天虹小學,跟校長談了兩個多小時…… 「我經驗淺,所以一定要更努力。」 校長2003年加入教師行列,三年前到天虹才變身校長,抱著一個「教育是要幫人作出改變」的理念。 當時天虹面臨殺校,僅剩六班學生。朱校長一上任,就放棄操練TSA,不在考試成績上與其他學校競爭,他在科技上的知識固然有助他以電子教學轉危為機,但我們看到更重要的,是他對教育的胸襟及人性化的處事態度,對學生如是,對老師如是。 在短短兩年兩個月,學校推陳出新不勝枚舉,並夥拍不同公司為學校度身訂造不同系統與特別室,更大方的將學校設施開放,讓其他中小學生也可使用。對我來說,校長俺然是個社會企業家。我們以下將訪談整理下來,讓大家評評,天虹是否一間開心學校。 彩虹拯救隊Rainbow Rangers 校長橋多,想出一個包括五隻動物的彩虹拯救隊穩定火山免其爆發的故事,鼓勵學生自律及提升學習動機。 學校與其他公司合作,開發這個遊戲apps,更真的建立起一個內有彩虹滑梯 (故事裡動物滑滑梯後會變身的工具)以及不同的需要肢體活動的電腦遊戲。學生不分社,而分為五個動物族,透過做到某些品格及學習上的要求,爭取幾種不同顏色寶石獎勵,集齊所有「寶石」,更可到「彩虹拯救隊基地」任玩一天。 3D打印室: 學校三年前已成立3D打印室,學生小小年紀已自己創做不少3D物品。讓我們大感讚嘆的,是學校跟3D打印公司合作,本年的四至十月期間,邀請全港中小學生來到學校學習3D打印,公司派員每週到來教授,更以解決水資源問題為題,六個月來教導超過1000位學生,透過思考這個問題,用3D打印技術設計解決方法,今日除了會成為健力士世界紀錄外,更會將3D打印機和那千個解決方法送到柬埔寨,讓當地人能利用本地的創作解決他們的水困問題。 天虹科創室(Rainbow Startup lab) 學校說這是培育明天企業家的地方。走進這間特別室,所有牆壁均為lego式磚塊,校長說,學校的校本課程,電腦課在小一至小三已教完,小四至小六就自己動手創作,小六學生都要自己做出一件產品,在台上向所有同學推銷,更要設計募款與銷售計劃。
Read More開心學校那裡尋?「教育大同」走訪黃大仙天虹小學 下集(上集在此) 兩個多星期前的上集竟然一兩天間有16485 views,可見家長對開心學校的殷切需求。對於「教育大同」搞開心學校地圖,支持及反對的朋友都有,容我先在這裡花點時間解釋一下,再看天虹下集內容。 「開心學校地圖」:正反意見都有: 反對的朋友說,這樣做很危險啊,我們只看到學校的片面,就幫他們做宣傳;有些說這樣做對那些被報導的學校未必公平,因為給他們很大壓力; 亦有些曾跟其他學校打交道的警告我們不要輕信,像校長這樣的人他們也見過不少,但後來就原型畢露 。。。 其實我們也考慮過這些。一間學校好與不好,開心與否,由誰而定?好與開心是很主觀的感覺,誠如立法會上見證的油天小女生,她覺得TSA好容易,冇問題,但另外的兩位小男生則大呼慘;家長也如是,真是沒可能有一把尺,至少,現在我們沒有。 「開心」是很主觀的: 學校作為一個系統,一定不能滿足所有人的需要,如你在家也未能滿足一家三四口的需要的話,學校不能做到,不難理解吧!無論學校聲稱的配套有多好,老師有多正,這只是一個平均數,若你的孩子不好彩,遇到一位樣樣以分數排名行頭的老師,那你的孩子必然會被催谷,就算隔離班那個老師多有耐性,多能照顧孩子個別需要,能開心學習的是隔離班的孩子,不是你的。所以,我們講的「開心學校」是有限制的。 為何要做「開心學校」地圖? 那為甚麼我們要冒這個險人去做這件事呢?這純綷因為看到家長嚴重缺乏選校資訊。現下網上有的都是非常表面的資料,所有學校的資訊都千篇一律, 都說全人教育,但實際上大部份都做不到。就算各大報章雜誌時有報導,但資料散落各方,不易搜尋,何況,大家選校,不大多是道聽途說的嗎?我記得自己孩子曾就讀的小學,被某某kingdom說成地底泥,我當時身在其中,並沒有如此感覺,方知那些留言者差不多都不是該校家長,作為家長連最基本的功課也不做,不去學校看看,光信這些留言,對學校做成的傷害極大。 曾經有家長提到出個學校黑名單, 我想這個其實大有市場,大家都想避開黑校,但正如前述,如何斷定學校好壞?有時,學校看似有個很好的機制與理念,但只要一個老師做不到,破壞性也很大。教育局本身就是一個很好的例子,若大家看看其網頁 (一定要懷著最公平的眼光。。。)你會發現教育局說的一切大多都好有道理,教育理想何其高尚!可惜系統一大,時間一久,一層一層的人士就將之扭曲,一路扭到學校的層面,連辦學團體及校長都不能秉承教育的根本理想去做事。 所以對「教育大同」來說,「開心學校」範指理念上、制度上均以人為先,以發掘孩子的個別潛能為首,夠膽不被考試成績牽著走的學校,即是起碼方針要對的學校。至於個別老師情況,及實際執行情況,就只有在校就讀的學生及其家長及老師才最清楚。所以這個地圖上的資料,將放入家長第一身的意見,讓大家多一個資料選校。我們選擇用正面的訊息,希望令有心去走不同路的學校得到更多家長的支持,希望其他學校見到家長開始選擇這些學校,而反思自己也需作點改變。這就是我們做這件事的原因。既然有家長連對學校沒有直接認知的三姑六婆也十分相信,那我們介紹個別學校時起碼已做了兩重過濾: 一:選擇由家長口中提到,或傳媒有報導的「疑似」開心學校;二:親身走訪學校,跟校長對話。 當然兩個多小時的訪問也是相當片面的,我們相信也真的會有不滿天虹的學生或家長。我們的工作是要將資訊公開,讓大家自己下個判斷。今天,校長給我一個電郵說: 「再次感謝你們之前的報導。經不同媒體討論後,很多家長也致電及電郵我們,問有關本校的教學念理,因此,我們決定安排一個簡單的天虹分享會及體驗日 (不是開放日,會令老師無心力教小朋友的),讓家長及孩子們體驗一個上午,天虹學生的學習生活。」 這就是我們想見的!家長自己去問,去找答案,學校自己回應!我們只是提供多點資料,大家要用用critical thinking, 還要加點冒險精神! (若你是選了band one/名校,而孩子日日受盡煎熬的話,又或者,你選了平平無奇的學校,但孩子天天愉快上學,就不難明白,揀校單靠個名,而沒有理會自己孩子是否合適,絕對是家長的錯! (當然若學校掛羊頭賣狗肉也是可恥的!)為何要大人犯的錯由孩子去受?

開心學校那裡尋? 「教育大同」走訪黃大仙浸信會天虹小學 天虹小學近來好紅。我們在「功課奴隸」群組看到有家長提起,再上網找找,發現常常戴著google眼鏡的朱子穎校長已被傳媒追訪多次,講talk 過百壇,但感覺不外乎是位「潮爆校長」在學校大搞IT,推動電子教學。今天11月28日, 學校要建立一項健力士世界紀錄:由全港1000個學生,利用 3D 打印創作解決「水資源」問題。一間在黃大仙的基層屋邨小學,如何做就這個壯舉? 為了籌備開心學校地圖,我們希望能直接了解「疑似」開心學校,故11月6日, 「教育大同」走訪了天虹小學,跟校長談了兩個多小時…… 「我經驗淺,所以一定要更努力。」 校長2003年加入教師行列,三年前到天虹才變身校長,抱著一個「教育是要幫人作出改變」的理念。 當時天虹面臨殺校,僅剩六班學生。朱校長一上任,就放棄操練TSA,不在考試成績上與其他學校競爭,他在科技上的知識固然有助他以電子教學轉危為機,但我們看到更重要的,是他對教育的胸襟及人性化的處事態度,對學生如是,對老師如是。 在短短兩年兩個月,學校推陳出新不勝枚舉,並夥拍不同公司為學校度身訂造不同系統與特別室,更大方的將學校設施開放,讓其他中小學生也可使用。對我來說,校長俺然是個社會企業家。我們以下將訪談整理下來,讓大家評評,天虹是否一間開心學校。 彩虹拯救隊Rainbow Rangers 校長橋多,想出一個包括五隻動物的彩虹拯救隊穩定火山免其爆發的故事,鼓勵學生自律及提升學習動機。 學校與其他公司合作,開發這個遊戲apps,更真的建立起一個內有彩虹滑梯 (故事裡動物滑滑梯後會變身的工具)以及不同的需要肢體活動的電腦遊戲。學生不分社,而分為五個動物族,透過做到某些品格及學習上的要求,爭取幾種不同顏色寶石獎勵,集齊所有「寶石」,更可到「彩虹拯救隊基地」任玩一天。 3D打印室: 學校三年前已成立3D打印室,學生小小年紀已自己創做不少3D物品。讓我們大感讚嘆的,是學校跟3D打印公司合作,本年的四至十月期間,邀請全港中小學生來到學校學習3D打印,公司派員每週到來教授,更以解決水資源問題為題,六個月來教導超過1000位學生,透過思考這個問題,用3D打印技術設計解決方法,今日除了會成為健力士世界紀錄外,更會將3D打印機和那千個解決方法送到柬埔寨,讓當地人能利用本地的創作解決他們的水困問題。 天虹科創室(Rainbow Startup lab) 學校說這是培育明天企業家的地方。走進這間特別室,所有牆壁均為lego式磚塊,校長說,學校的校本課程,電腦課在小一至小三已教完,小四至小六就自己動手創作,小六學生都要自己做出一件產品,在台上向所有同學推銷,更要設計募款與銷售計劃。
開心學校那裡尋?「教育大同」走訪黃大仙天虹小學 下集(上集在此) 兩個多星期前的上集竟然一兩天間有16485 views,可見家長對開心學校的殷切需求。對於「教育大同」搞開心學校地圖,支持及反對的朋友都有,容我先在這裡花點時間解釋一下,再看天虹下集內容。 「開心學校地圖」:正反意見都有: 反對的朋友說,這樣做很危險啊,我們只看到學校的片面,就幫他們做宣傳;有些說這樣做對那些被報導的學校未必公平,因為給他們很大壓力; 亦有些曾跟其他學校打交道的警告我們不要輕信,像校長這樣的人他們也見過不少,但後來就原型畢露 。。。 其實我們也考慮過這些。一間學校好與不好,開心與否,由誰而定?好與開心是很主觀的感覺,誠如立法會上見證的油天小女生,她覺得TSA好容易,冇問題,但另外的兩位小男生則大呼慘;家長也如是,真是沒可能有一把尺,至少,現在我們沒有。 「開心」是很主觀的: 學校作為一個系統,一定不能滿足所有人的需要,如你在家也未能滿足一家三四口的需要的話,學校不能做到,不難理解吧!無論學校聲稱的配套有多好,老師有多正,這只是一個平均數,若你的孩子不好彩,遇到一位樣樣以分數排名行頭的老師,那你的孩子必然會被催谷,就算隔離班那個老師多有耐性,多能照顧孩子個別需要,能開心學習的是隔離班的孩子,不是你的。所以,我們講的「開心學校」是有限制的。 為何要做「開心學校」地圖? 那為甚麼我們要冒這個險人去做這件事呢?這純綷因為看到家長嚴重缺乏選校資訊。現下網上有的都是非常表面的資料,所有學校的資訊都千篇一律, 都說全人教育,但實際上大部份都做不到。就算各大報章雜誌時有報導,但資料散落各方,不易搜尋,何況,大家選校,不大多是道聽途說的嗎?我記得自己孩子曾就讀的小學,被某某kingdom說成地底泥,我當時身在其中,並沒有如此感覺,方知那些留言者差不多都不是該校家長,作為家長連最基本的功課也不做,不去學校看看,光信這些留言,對學校做成的傷害極大。 曾經有家長提到出個學校黑名單, 我想這個其實大有市場,大家都想避開黑校,但正如前述,如何斷定學校好壞?有時,學校看似有個很好的機制與理念,但只要一個老師做不到,破壞性也很大。教育局本身就是一個很好的例子,若大家看看其網頁 (一定要懷著最公平的眼光。。。)你會發現教育局說的一切大多都好有道理,教育理想何其高尚!可惜系統一大,時間一久,一層一層的人士就將之扭曲,一路扭到學校的層面,連辦學團體及校長都不能秉承教育的根本理想去做事。 所以對「教育大同」來說,「開心學校」範指理念上、制度上均以人為先,以發掘孩子的個別潛能為首,夠膽不被考試成績牽著走的學校,即是起碼方針要對的學校。至於個別老師情況,及實際執行情況,就只有在校就讀的學生及其家長及老師才最清楚。所以這個地圖上的資料,將放入家長第一身的意見,讓大家多一個資料選校。我們選擇用正面的訊息,希望令有心去走不同路的學校得到更多家長的支持,希望其他學校見到家長開始選擇這些學校,而反思自己也需作點改變。這就是我們做這件事的原因。既然有家長連對學校沒有直接認知的三姑六婆也十分相信,那我們介紹個別學校時起碼已做了兩重過濾: 一:選擇由家長口中提到,或傳媒有報導的「疑似」開心學校;二:親身走訪學校,跟校長對話。 當然兩個多小時的訪問也是相當片面的,我們相信也真的會有不滿天虹的學生或家長。我們的工作是要將資訊公開,讓大家自己下個判斷。今天,校長給我一個電郵說: 「再次感謝你們之前的報導。經不同媒體討論後,很多家長也致電及電郵我們,問有關本校的教學念理,因此,我們決定安排一個簡單的天虹分享會及體驗日 (不是開放日,會令老師無心力教小朋友的),讓家長及孩子們體驗一個上午,天虹學生的學習生活。」 這就是我們想見的!家長自己去問,去找答案,學校自己回應!我們只是提供多點資料,大家要用用critical thinking, 還要加點冒險精神! (若你是選了band one/名校,而孩子日日受盡煎熬的話,又或者,你選了平平無奇的學校,但孩子天天愉快上學,就不難明白,揀校單靠個名,而沒有理會自己孩子是否合適,絕對是家長的錯! (當然若學校掛羊頭賣狗肉也是可恥的!)為何要大人犯的錯由孩子去受?
